It is Christmas week – and the last full week of the year – which means we have very little in the way of upcoming events in financial markets. Despite our expressed antipathy for financial market prediction pieces, year-in-review pieces covering other topics are far more fascinating. Gell-Mann Amnesia at work? Either way, below is a finance-free and Trump-free (mostly) list of what people have been writing about 2018. As always, these are the most representative, not the most read, highest quality, etc:

Topical Trends from Corporate Earnings Calls (12/2018)

As we’ve written a fair bit recently, the source of narrative can often be as important as the stories being told themselves. By narrowing the source to corporate executives (and to a lesser extent, Q&A from sell-side sources), public company earnings call transcripts provide a useful supplement to our aggregate measures of narrative.

The below chart shows the percentage of public company company earnings calls which referred to various topics over the past two years.

Source: Quid, Epsilon Theory, Seeking Alpha

The two main takeaways will not be surprising:

  • Tariff impacts have moved to front-of-mind status for many companies.
  • While inflation topics have begun to fade for the time being, Q4-to-date calls have demonstrated an increased focus on interest rates and central bank activity.

This data is largely consistent with the broader attention results from our December narrative monitors. Below we list some of the most indicative transcripts from the most recent quarter – not necessarily the most read, but the ones which share the most language and connection with other stories. Viewing full detail will require Seeking Alpha registration.
